Brasure: Generation 2

The Sons of Mitchell Brasure & Sarah Hill

James Alfred Brasure & Catherine Hudson

c. 1827: James Alfred Brasure was born in Sussex County, DE.  He was called Alfred.

c. 1828: Catherine Hudson was born in Sussex County, DE.  According to Bobby Collins, her sibling was Rennie Hudson, but who were here parents?

13 Oct 1846: James Alfred and Catherine were married.

26 Jul 1850 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Farmer age 23; born in DE; Catherine 21, born DE; Mitchel G. 3; Samuel S. 1; Sarah age 46.  They were enumerated between Benton H. and Elizabeth Evans Brasure and James and Sarah H. Bishop.  On the other side of Benton were James and Elizabeth Brasure.[1]  Is Sarah James' mother, Sarah Hill Brasure?

27 Jul 1860 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE  (Tunnell's Store P.O.): James Brasure age 34, born in DE, can't read or write, with real and personal property valued at $600 and $250 respectively; Elizabeth 55, born DE; Samuel W. 20; Catherine 12; Samuel H. 10; Sarah E. 6; William 4; female Arrea age 1.[2]  Where were wife Catherine and son Mitchel?  Who was this Elizabeth?  Was she Sarah Elizabeth, and thus the same woman enumerated in 1850, who I'm presuming was James' mother?  And who was Samuel W. age 20?  He hasn't been found, age 10, residing with any Brasure families in 1850.

7 Oct 1860: Along with Eber A. Dazey, Alfred was surety for the will of John Dazey.[3]

James served as a Private in Company D, 6th Delaware Regiment, Union Army for 2 years, 10 months, and 5 days.  He was discharged on 23 Aug 1863.[4]  Company D, 6th Regiment served primarily as guards at Fort Delaware, "a dreaded prison" for captured Confederates.

2 Jun 1870 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Farmer James A. Brasure 43, born in DE, with personal property worth $473; Catherine 42; mariner Mitchel G. 22; Samuel J. 21, who "works on farm"; Sarah E. 16; William A. 13; Arean C. 10; Birtha A. 8; Edward D. 6; Jacob A. 1.  They were enumerated close to Elizabeth Brasure, age 59, and next to Thomas and Nancy Cottingham Bishop Atkins.  The latter couple were the daughter and son-in-law of Joshua W. and Nancy Comfort West Bishop.[5]

In Heritage of the Sound Church, Founded 1779: "It has been stated [that] the quarter acre site was donated on Jan 16, 1871 by Charles Collins to James Brasure, Jacob H. Brasure, Edward W. McCabe, [and] John R. MaColum, trustees.  The deed mentions that the meeting house had been erected and that it was called 'Union Sound M.E. church'.  It also describes the site as being the road to Finicar's Island, which was probably Fenwick Island misspelled.  Pioneers in rebuilding the church were James Brasure, Jacob Brasure, Ruben Bishop, Alfred Lynch, Exekil Williams, Lemuel Williams, Thomas Adkins, John Williams, and Edward Williams".  The Sound Methodist Church is located approx 1 mile east of Williamsville on Route 54 about 11 miles from the ocean.[6]

30 Jun 1880 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Keeping house, a widow age 52, born DE; farmer William A. age 21 with "lame hand"; farmer Jacob A. 12.[7]  They were enumerated next to James L. and Louisa Brasure, James and Ann M. Brasure.

Joshua H. Brasure and 1) Elizabeth P. Hudson 2) Laura Ann Tubbs

10 May 1832: Joshua H. Brasure was born in Sussex County, DE.[11]

c. 1838: Elizabeth P. Hudson was born in Sussex County, DE.  Her parents were supposedly Samuel (1805-1860) and Elizabeth Hudson.

10 Mar 1849: Joshua was apprenticed at age 17 ("as near as can be ascertained") to Isaac E. Burton for 4 years to learn the craft of cabinet making.  Under the terms of the indenture Joshua was to receive each year one month's schooling and $23.00, from which he was to supply his own clothing.

1850 Census, Sussex County, DE  (Baltimore Hundred): Cabinet maker age 17, born Sussex County, DE, residing in the household of cabinet maker Israel and Elizabeth Burton.[12]

20 Oct 1851: Joshua's indenture was cancelled by the court, Joshua being "released and discharged" with Isaac Burton "interspersing his objections to the prayer of the petitioner but consenting thereto."[13]

24 Jul 1860 Census, Sussex County, DE  (Baltimore Hundred):  House carpenter age 28, with real and personal property valued at $400 and $200 respectively; Elizabeth P. age 22, born DE; Mary M. age 4; Lucinda H. age 2; and Elijah age 1.  They were listed next to Jacob and Margaret Brasure.[14]

3 Jun 1870 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE  (Roxanna P.O.): Farmer Joshua Brasure 38, born in DE, with real and personal property worth $1,000 and $435 respectively; Elizabeth age 31; Mary M. age 14; Lucinda H. age 12; Elijah D. age 10; Emma E. age 7; Anna M. age 5; Ida B. age 3; Mariah C. age 1.  The family was enumerated close to the household of James and Elizabeth Brasure, ages 55.[15]

4 Jun 1880 Census, Chincoteague, Accomack County, VA: Carpenter Joshua Brazure 48, DE DE DE; Elizabeth P. age 42; sailor Elijah age 20; Ida age 13; Maria C. age 11; Joshua age 8, born in VA; Emma E. age 1, born VA.  They were listed between Charles and Hester Collins and Reuben and Margaret Bishop.[16]  Hester and Reuben were brother and sister to James Bishop, husband of Joshua's daughter Lucinda.

3 Nov 1881: Joshua H. Brazier, a farmer aged 45, the son of Mitchell Brazier and Sarah Hill married Laura A. McGee [nee Tubbs] Tubbs 38, the daughter of William R. Tubbs and Ann Runnels, in Sussex County, DE.  The bondsman was J. L. Brasure; the ceremony was performed by Rev. William R. Tubbs.  According to Ida May Melson Olroyd, Laura Ann was born 8 Jul 1842 and died 24 Oct 1941.  Who was J. L. Brasure - James Lavin Brasure, John L. Brasure, or another man entirely?

22 Aug 1899: Joshua died of unknown causes.  His burial place isn't known.

26 Apr 1910 Census, Parragoula City, Jackson County, MS: House painter Elias Stokes 35, FL FL FL, married for 12 years; Fannie E. 30, FL FL FL, mother of one child, still living; Dewey A. 10, FL FL FL; boarder Joseph Birch 60, MD MD MD, a laborer at odd jobs; boarder Lucinda H. Bishop 52, DE DE DE, married for 25 years, mother of 5 children, 3 living; boarder Laura Brasier 67, a widow, DE DE DE, a servant doing housework.[17]  Lucinda was Joshua's daughter; Elias Stokes would become Lucinda's second husband.  I'm assuming, since Laura was residing with Elias and Lucinda, that she was a staunch member of the Christ's Holy Sanctified Church.

Children of Joshua and Elizabeth Hudson Brasure:

Mary M. Brasure (c. 1856 -     )

Lucinda H. Brasure (25 Sep 1858 - 1 Apr 1848; m. 1st James Bishop 21 Dec 1876, m. 2nd Elias Stokes)

Elijah David Brasure (13 Nov 1858 - 30 Mar 1940; m. Mary Ann Birch 16 Jun 1881)

Emma E. Brasure (c. 1863 -     )

What happened to this Emma who was age seven in the 1870 Census?  If married, it's unlikely that her parents would name a second daughter Emma E.  More plausible is that the first Emma had died in childhood or that the younger Emma E. was a grandchild

Anna M. Brasure (c. 1865 -     )

Ida Belle Brasure (11 Oct 1866 -     ; m. Salem A. Doughty)

Maria C. Brasure (16 Feb 1869 - 11 May 1937; m. William James Collins 7 Feb 1886)

Josephine Brasure (2 Sep 1876 -     )

And then there was Emma E. Brasure (14 Dec 1878 -     ; m. Daniel J. Lewis 17 Dec 1896)

Children of Joshua and Laura Tubbs McGee Brasure:

Angie Mazella Brasure (8 Jul 1882 -     )

Laura Kate Brasure (27 Aug 1884 -     )
