Brasure Families in Sussex County, Delaware

The Brasures are very much an ongoing investigation.  I hope, by posting my material now rather than later, to encourage the contribution of information from family bibles, newspaper clippings, photos, and other sources held by descendants, so that the various lines can be established.  I'll also be adding land records and wills in the future.

The heads of families below are presented in descending order of birth, from earliest to latest. Where necessary, there are hyperlinks from parents to children, and children to parents.  I've added my own nicknames in order help differentiate the various early Williams and Godfreys and James.  Any Brasures who appeared only once in the records and who could not be placed in a family can be found in Unassigned Brasures.

Because the censuses, birth, marriage, and death records were all taken from the original records now digitized on Ancestry, I've footnoted only those sources obtained elsewhere.

Obviously, the lines of father to son below are muddled and incomplete.  If you can correct or add to this information, please contact me at breidenthal@centurytel.net.

There is a FamilyTree DNA Project for Brashear/Brasure.

There was a long-running boundary dispute between the colonies of Delaware and Maryland, a dispute not settled until 1775.  Before then, the approximately twelve miles on the southern side of Sussex County, DE was considered to be Worcester County, MD.  Both before and after, families such as the Brasures and Bishops could be found on both sides of the boundary  line.

William  & Sarah Brasure

("William the Elder")

1756: William Brazer had 140 acres in Sussex County surveyed.[1]  This would indicate that William was born before 1735.

1759: William Brazer had 60 acres called Brazer's Discovery surveyed.[2]

1761: William Brazer had 453 acres called Partnership surveyed.[3]

The 1783 Tax List for Worcester County, MD included Godfrey Brashere, Belitha Brasure, and 3 William Brasures.  Two of the Williams were listed for "Buckingham and Worcester", one in "Mattapony".

27 Sep 1784: His will was proved.  Belitha Brashur was named administrator in place of Sarah Brasher, the widow, who had rejected the position.  Securities for Belitha's bond were Israel Townsend and Samuel Johnson.   Other next of kin named were Ann and Godfrey Brasher.[4]  While there were females who were named Belitha, it was most often given a male name.  A Belitha Brasure reportedly died in Worcester County in 1797.

Godfrey Brasure

("Godfrey Senior")

Based upon the censuses, Godfrey was born c. 1760.  He was probably the son of William the Elder.

1794: Godfrey Brayser received a warrant for 200 acres in Sussex County.[5]

1800 Census, Sussex County , DE: Godfrey Brashur was shown with 1 male under 10; 1 26-45; 3 females under 10, 1 26-45.

18 Apr 1810: Along with James Law Senior and James W. Taylor, Godfrey Brasier witnessed the will of Mary Collins.

1810 Census, Sussex County, DE: 2 males under 10, 1 10-16, 1 over 45; 2 females under 10, 1 10-16, 1 26-45.

1820 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: The Godfrey Brazier family was enumerated with 1 male 10-16, 1 16-18, 2 16-26, 1 over 45; 1 female under 1-10, 1 16-26, 1 over 45.  They were listed between James Hickman and Warren McCabe.

1830 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Godfrey Brasure was listed with 1 male 70-80; 1 female 5-10, 1 50-60.

1840 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: 1 male 80-90; 1 female 15-20, 1 80-90.  There's a discrepancy in the oldest female's age in 1830 and 1840.  Was it simply the census taker's error - or had Godfrey remarried?

William Brasure

("William the Younger")

According to the 1830 Census, this William must have been born 1760-1770.  His father was probably William the Elder.

1800 Census, Sussex County, DE: William Brashur was listed with 1 male under 10, 1 26-45; 1 female under 10, 1 16-26.

William hasn't been located in the 1810 Census, but there was a William Brazier in neighboring Worcester County, MD that year.  See Unassigned Brasures.

1820 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: William Brazur was listed with 2 males under 10, 1 10-16, 1 16-18, 2 16-26, 1 over 45; 1 female under 10, 1 16-26, 1 26-45; 3 persons engaged in agriculture.  There was also a William Brazier in Dagsboro Hundred with 1 male under 10, 2 10-16, 1 16-26, 1 over 45; 1 female, 1 10-16, 1 16-26, 1 26-45.  Who was that William?

1830 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: William Brasure "Senior" was enumerated with 1 male 5-10, 1 10-15, 1 60-70; 2 females 10-15, 1 15-20, 1 50-60.

James & Sophia Brasure

("Old James")

c. 1780: James was born in Delaware.  He was most likely the son of William the Elder or Godfrey Senior, but conceivably he could have been the son of William the Elder, as the latter didn't die until 1784..

1820 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: James Brayzer was enumerated with 2 males under 10, 1 10-16, 1 16-18, 1 16-26, 1 26-45;  1 female under 10, 1 10-16, 1 26-45, 3 persons engaged in agriculture.

1830 Census, Sussex County, DE: James Brazier was the head of a household consisting of 2 males 10-15, 1 20-30, 1 50-60; 1 female 15-20, 1 20-30, 1 50-60.  They were listed close to Joshua Bishop.   Were the 20-30 year old male and female Godfrey and Lovey Hudson Brasure?

Where was James in 1840?

1832: James Brazier and wife were involved in a land conveyance with Armwell Long in Sussex.[6]

12 Apr 1836: James (x) Braisure married Soffee Hill.  Was that this James?  Was Sophia not his first wife?

26 Jul 1850 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Farmer age 70, born in DE, can't read or write, with real property worth $100; Sophia age 70; Hetty age 12.  They were fairly close to the family of 30 year old Jacob H. Brasure.

Godfrey Brasure & Lovey Hudson

("Godfrey Junior")

c. 1797: Godfrey Brasure was born in Maryland.  His father was probably William the Younger or Godfrey Senior.

31 Jan 1822: Godfrey Brasher married Lovey Hudson in Sussex County.  Lovey was the daughter of Samuel and Martha Ann Dingle Hudson.

Where were Godfrey and Lovey in the 1830 Census?  They may have been the 23-30 year old male and female in the household of James and Sophia Brasure.

1840 Census, Dagsboro Hundred, Sussex County, DE:  Godfrey Brazur was enumerated with 2 males under 5, 1 5-10, 2 10-15, 1 15-20, 1 40-50; 1 female 40-50.  They were listed close to John [L.] Brazer, age 20-30, the only other Brasure in Dagsboro Hundred that year.

14 Aug 1850 Census, Dagsboro Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Farmer age 53, born in MD, can't read or write; Lovey 46, born DE; laborer George age 23; Joseph B. age 17; Belitha 14; William 14.  They were listed close to [son] Perry Brasure.

11 Jul 1870 Census, Dagsboro Hundred, Sussex County, DE (Dagsboro P.O.): George 39, born DE, employed as day worker, can't read or write; Lovey 70, born DE, with property worth $200.  George was Godfrey and Lovey's son.

Children of Godfrey and Lovey Hudson Brasure:

William Perry Brasure (c. 1824 -     ; m. Charlotte Johnson c. 1853)

George Brasure (c. 1827 -     )

11 Jul 1870 Census, Dagsboro Hundred, Sussex County, DE (Dagsboro P.O.): George Brasure 39, born DE, employed as day worker, can't read or write; Lovey 70, born DE, with property worth $200.

11 Jun 1880 Census, Dagsboro Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Laborer George Brasure 50, DE DE DE.  But was this the son of Godfrey and Lovey?

 Belitha Brasure (c. 1831 -     )

 William Brasure (c. 1835 - 1850)

William Brasure and 1) Mary Ann Long 2) Mary Hickman

("William III")

Judging from the censuses, William was born c. 1799.

29 Jan 1824: William Brasher married Mary Ann Long.  While there's no definitive proof that the groom was William III, it's highly likely.

1830 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: 1 male under 5, 1 5-10, 1 30-40; 1 female under 5, 1 30-40, 1 40-50, 1 50-60.  Why all the older females?

1837: He purchased land from Henry Hickman in Sussex County.[7]

1840 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: The William Brazur household consisted of 1 male 10-15, 1 15-20, 1 30-40; 2 females under 5, 2 5-10, 1 30-40, 1 60-70.  Why the discrepancies in age for the obvious male and females heads between 1830 and 1840?

c. 1842: William Brasure et al were involved in one land deed with  _____ Barnard, and a second with Maria _____.[8]  The "et al" would indicate an estate. The Mitchell Brasure estate was apparently probated c. 1842.

22 Jul 1844: William married Mary Hickman.  Her father was probably Henry Hickman.

Jul 1850 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Farmer age 51, with real property valued at $1,600; Mary 25; Henry 24; Hannah 22; Bersheba 16; Margaret 6; John 4; Emeline 2; Mary Elizabeth 13; merchant Peter R. Waples 38, with property worth $2,800; farmer John S. Waples 32, with property valued at $1,800; farmer Tober Williams 30, black.  All were born in Sussex County, DE.  Mary Elizabeth's age is not a typo.  Either the census taker made the error or she was not the Eliza Justis enumerated in the 1870 Census.

24 Oct 1855: William Brasher, deceased, was cited as the adjoining landowner to David Moore in the latter's will.[9]  John L. Brasure, born c. 1815, had married Kitty Moore on 5 Dec 1839.

12 Jul 1870 Census, Dagsboro Hundred, Sussex County, DE (Frankford P.O.): Farmer Isaac Justis 26, born DE, with personal property valued at $100; Eliza 22, born DE; Mary Brasure 45, born MD, with personal property worth $600; farmer John Brasure 23, born DE; Ellenor Brasure, age 16; farm laborer Henry Hudson 20, born DE.  Is Eliza Justis really Mary Elizabeth Brasure Justis?  And who is Ellenor Brasure, a daughter or daughter-in-law?

Was Mary Hickman Brasure the Mary C. Brasure who died on 22 Jun 1903 of "general debility", age 76?

Children of William Brasure by first wife, probably Mary Ann Long:

Henry Brasure (c. 1826 -     )

Hannah Brasure (c. 1828 -     )

Was she the Hannah W. Brasure who married Levin Bennett on 19 Oct 1852?

Bersheba Brasure (c. 1834 -     )

Children of William and Mary Hickman Brasure:

Margaret Brasure (c. 1845 -     )

John S. Brasure (17 Jul 1846 - 8 Nov 1926; m. 1st Angeline Lockwood, m. 2nd Catherine ______)

Mary Elizabeth Brasure (c. 1847 -     )

Emeline Brasure (c. 1848 -     )

An Emeline Brashier married William R. Rogers on 30 Dec 1874.

Timmons had married Lovy Brashier on 25 Nov 1848.  Was Lovey the daughter of Littleton and Lydia?

7 Jun 1870 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE (Selbyville P.O.): Coach maker Alfred Clendaniel 25, born DE, with personal and real property estimated at $100 and $300; Hetty C. 25, born DE; Lydda Brasure 60, born DE, with personal property worth $200; journeyman coach maker Lemuel Brasure 26, his personal property valued at$300.

Benton H. Brasure and 1) Effie Dickson 2) Elizabeth Evans

Benton was probably born c. 1805There was an older Benton, born c. 1780, who died in Sussex County in 1850.  I have no substantative information at present on that Benton.

15 Jan 1829: Benton married Effie Dickson in Sussex County.

1830 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: 1 male 20-30; 1 female under 5; 1 20-30.

In the 1830 Census, there was also "Benton Brasure Senior" with 1 male 15-20; 1 female under 5, 1 20-30.  But where is the adult, "Senior" male?

1840 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: The Benton H. Brazur family consisted of 1 male under 10, 2 males 5-10, 1 30-40; 2 females under 5, 1 10-15, 1 20-30.

7 Nov 1842: He married Elizabeth Evans, who may've been a widow.  If she was, it calls into question the parentage of all children shown residing with the family in 1850, except Silas.  Could she have been born a Williams?

1850 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Farmer age 45, born in DE, can't read or write; Elizabeth age 39; Nasha Magee, a female age 60, born MD; farmer John E. 19, born DE; Elijah 18; Mary 15; Elizabeth 13; Silas 4.  The family was enumerated between James and Elizabeth Brasure and James A. and Catherine Brasure; very close to James and Sarah Bishop.  James A. Brasure was the son of Mitchell Brasure.  In 1870 and 1880, Jacob H. Brasure had a Silas, who was "deaf and dumb", residing with his family.

28 Jan 1851: Along with James L. and Lemuel S. Williams and Elizabeth Brasher, Benton H. Brasher witnessed the will of Nathan Williams in Sussex County.[11]   The executor of Williams' will was Joshua T. Lynch.

2 Jun 1870 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Elizabeth Brasure age 59, born DE, residing alone close to John H. and Keturah Hudson and James A. Brasure.

Children of Benton and Effie Brasure: According to 1830 and 1840 Censuses, they also had one daughter born 1825-1830.

John E. Brasure (c. 1831 -     )

Elijah Brasure (c.1832 -     )

Could this be the 28 year old Elisha Brasure who died in Jun 1860?

Mary Brasure (c. 1835 -     )

Elizabeth Brasure (c. 1837 -     )

Children of Benton and Elizabeth Evans Brasure:

Silas Brasure (c. 1846 - 26 Dec 1900)

1 Jun 1870 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE (Roxana P.O.): Farmer Jacob H. Brasure 52, born in DE, with real and personal property worth $2,500 and $1,500; Margaret J. age 50; Sarah 14; Silas age 21, "deaf and dumb"; Thomas Godwin age 11.

11 Jun 1880 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Farmer Jacob H. Brasure 62; Margaret 60; "deaf and dumb" nephew Silas 28; sister-in-law Martha Jones 65.  All were born in Delaware.

Silas is buried in Sound United Methodist Cemetery.

John L. Brasure and 1) Kitty Moore 2) Mary Atkins

c. 1815: John was born in Delaware.

5 Dec 1839: John married Kitty Moore.

1840 Census, Dagsboro Hundred, Sussex County, DE: John Brazur was listed with 1 male 20-30; 2 females under 5, 1 20-30.  The family was listed very close to Godfrey Brazer, age 40-50.

23 Aug 1850 Census, Dagsborough Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Farmer age 35, born in DE, can't read or write; Kitty 34; Charlotte J. age 11; Lydia A. age 9; Gardiner H. age 7; Mary 4; John H. age 9/12.

5 Aug 1857: Was Kitty the Cathrin Brasher who was mentioned as a legatee in the will of father William Moore in Dagsboro Hundred?[12]

18 Mar 1860: John married Mary Atkins, daughter of Mitchell and Louisa Davidson Atkins.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. Isaac T. Atkins.

18 Jul 1860 Census, Dagsboro Hundred, Sussex County, DE  (Dagsboro P.O.): Farmer John L. Brasiur age 44, born in DE with personal property valued at $400; Mary 30; Charlotte I. age 21; Lydia 19; male G. H. W. age 16; Catherine 14; John H. age 11; Mary C. age 7.  Who was Mary C, age 7?  She was too young to be Mary Catherine, too old to be John and Lydia's granddaughter.

1870 Census, Dagsboro Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Mary Brasure age 41, born DE, can't read or write; Vessia 8; William M. age 6; Louisa Atkins age 7__.   But is this really the widow of John L. Brasure?

Children of John L. Brasure and Kitty Moore:

Ralph James Brasure (11 Dec 1906 - Nov 1972)

James Brasure and 1) Elizabeth 2) Ann M.

("Young James")

c. 1816: James Brasure was born in Delaware.

4 Feb 1836: James Braisure married Elizabeth Rogers.  But was that couple the same James and Elizabeth?

1840 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: The James Brazur family was enumerated with 1 male 20-30; 2 females under 5, 1 10-15, 1 20-30.  Who was the 5-10 year old female?  And had Elizabeth really had 4 children in 3 years?

1850 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Farmer age 32, born Sussex, DE; Elizabeth 34; Mary 14; Ann M. age 12; Sarah J. age 8; James L. age 16.  They were listed next to Benton H. Brasure and James A. Brasure and James Bishop; close to James and Sophia Brasure, ages 70.  James A. Brasure was the son of Mitchell Brasure, Benton was the probable brother of Jacob H. Brasure.  James was born c. 1780.  Was he Mitchell's father and thus grandfather to both James A. and Jacob H. through different sons?

24 Jul 1850: He was probably the James Brasure who listed on the Slave Schedule with 1 slave.  What's even more interesting is the slave was a male, aged 104!  The only other possibility would seem to be James Alfred Brasure.

25 Jul 1860 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Farmer James Brasure 44, born in DE, with real and personal property estimated at $1500 and $500; Elizabeth 42; Sarah I. age 18; James L. age 15; Julia E. age 9; Margaret H. 3; Nancy C. 1.  The microfilm is extremely difficult to read.

Jacob H. Brasure & Margaret J. Hill

Jacob seems to have had close ties with our Joshua H. Brasure, but they're precluded from being brothers because Joshua's father Mitchell Brasure married Sarah Hill 6 six years after Jacob was born.  If, however, Mitchell was born earlier than 1800 - and that's a possibility - Jacob might be his son by an earlier marriage.

Dec 1817: Jacob was born in Sussex County, Delaware.  The likeliest candidates to have been his father are William the Younger and Old James.

Apr 1820: Margaret J. Hill was born in Delaware.

17 Feb 1845: Jacob H. Brasure [the groom] and Levin H. Evans posted bond for the marriage of Jacob to Margaret Hill.

7 Jan 1848: Isaac Powell, age 4 1/2, was apprenticed to Jacob H. Brasier to learn farming.  Isaac was to receive 12 months schooling, all clothing and support, plus two suits of clothes upon expiration of the indenture.  Witnesses: Asbury Williams and Burton H. Johnson.[13]

26 July 1850 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Farmer Jacob H. Brasure 30, born DE, with property valued at $500; Margaret J. age 29, born DE; Elizabeth 12; Isaac Powell 6; William Cooper 4; sailor John H. Hill 50.  They were listed very close to James and Sophia Brasure Were James and Sophia, both 70, his parents?  And who were 12 year old Elizabeth, too old to be the daughter of Margaret Hill Brasure, and William Cooper?

24 Jul 1860 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE  (Millsboro P.O.):  Farmer Jacob H. Brasure 40, born in DE, with real and personal property estimated at $1,500 and $1,500; Margaret J. age 39, born DE; Isaac Powel age 17; George C. age 8; Nancy C. G. 7; Sarah S. age 4; Sophia H. age 74, born DE.  They were enumerated next to Joshua and Elizabeth Brasure and very close to the household of Thomas Godwin, a mariner, age 40, born DE; Elizabeth 15; Thomas 1; and Sarah Brasiur 55.

1 Jun 1870 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE (Roxana P.O.): Farmer Jacob H. Brasure 52, born in DE, with real and personal property worth $2,500 and $1,500; Margaret J. age 50; Sarah 14; Silas age 21, "deaf and dumb"; Thomas Godwin age 11.  Silas was probably the son of Benton and Elizabeth Brasure.  If so, Benton and Joshua were obviously brothers.

"It has been stated [that] the quarter acre site was donated on Jan 16, 1871 by Charles Collins to James Brasure, Jacob H. Brasure, Edward W. McCabe, [and] John R. Macolum, trustees.  The deed mentions that the meeting house had been erected and that it was called 'Union Sound M.E. church'.  It also describes the site as being the road to Finicar's Island, which was probably Fenwick Island misspelled.  Pioneers in rebuilding the church were James Brasure, Jacob Brasure, Ruben Bishop, Alfred Lynch, Exekil Williams, Lemuel Williams, Thomas Adkins, John Williams, and Edward Williams".  The Sound Methodist Church is located approx 1 mile east of Williamsville on Route 54 about 11 miles from the ocean.[14]  Was that this Jacob H. Brasure?  Or was the middle initial an error?

11 Jun 1880 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex Co, DE: Farmer Jacob H. Brasure 62; Margaret 60; "deaf and dumb" nephew Silas 28; sister-in-law Martha Jones 65.  All were born in Delaware.

12 Dec 1901: Jacob Brasure , a 84 year old farmer in Baltimore Hundred, died of "worn out heart trouble".  He's buried in Sound United Methodist Cemetery, adjoining the church he helped to build.  Jacob's tombstone reads 25 Dec 1812 - 11 Dec 1901.

7 May 1908: Margaret Hill Brasure died and was buried next to Jacob in Sound United Methodist Cemetery.

John H. & Mary M. Brasure

Apr 1851: John H. Brasure was born in Sussex County, DE, the son of John L. Brasure and Kitty MooreThere's a discrepancy, however, in John's birth date.  John H. Brasure, son of John and Kitty, was listed on the 1850 Census as 9 months old on August 23.  This would seem to to indicate two separate John H. Brasures, both born roughly the same time, only one the son of John L. and Kitty.  Or it's possible that John's birth year was simply recorded incorrectly in the census - unfortunately all too common .

13 Jul 1870 Census, Sussex County DE (Frankford P.O.): Farmer Robert Hudson 31, born DE, with real and personal property valued at $2,000 and $700; Nancy 32, born DE; Martha A. 9; Charles H. 5; Ida E. 3; George B. age 1; farm laborer John H. Brasure 20, born DE.
