All the entries below were compiled in an attempt to sort out the various Brasure families in Sussex County, DE. All birth, marriages, and deaths in Sussex County were obtained from digitized records available on Ancestry.
In Sussex County, DE: There was a long-running boundary dispute between the colonies of Delaware and Maryland, a dispute not settled until 1775. Before then, the approximately twelve miles on the southern side of Sussex County, DE was considered to be Worcester County, MD.
1775: On Fenwick Island, which lies on the coast just off Maryland and Delaware, James and Jacob Brasure, Fenwick residents, began the business of extracting and selling sea salt in 1775. This was a highly profitable business for the next fifty years. "Now on display at the Fenwick Lighthouse is one of the two original salt pots used by the Brasures."[1] James and Jacob were described as being young in 1775.
Along with Daniel Rodgers and Major Bailey, Mary Brazer witnessed a deed from John and Bridget Gootee to William Fitchet in Broadkill Hundred.
28 Feb 1795: Priscilla Brasher married John Harper Junior.
12 Sep 1819: Polly Brasher and Reuben (x) Stephens were married. Bondsman: Cornelius Coffin. Witnesses: Isaiah Latham and Isaac Collins. According to Marjorie Adams, Polly may have been the eldest daughter of Godfrey Brasure. Polly died before 1850.
1820 Census, Dagsboro Hundred: William Brazier was listed with 1 male under 10, 2 10-16, 1 16-26, 1 over 45; 1 female, 1 10-16, 1 16-26, 1 26-45.[2]
6 Feb 1829: Gideon Brasure married Patience McCabe, with John Long as bondsman. Gideon (c. 1805 - ) moved to Preble County, OH by 1850, along with James and Hetty Lockwood Brasure and Mitchell and Lydia Brasure Murray.
10 Jan 1830: Lydia Brasure married Mitchell (x) Murray, with John Bull as bondsman. Lydia was the daughter of Gideon Brasure.[2a] The Murrays moved to Eaton, Preble County, OH by 1850.
22 Jan 1831: James (x) Brasure married Hetty Lockwood with James Collins as bondsman. James and Hetty moved to Preble County, OH where they resided next to Gideon Brasure. James was born c. 1808.
22 Feb 1831: Vicey Braisure married Handy Timmons. Littleton (x) Brasure was the bondsman. In 1850, Handy and Levina Timmons , ages 45 and 41, were residing in Baltimore Hundred.
3 Apr 1832: Nancy Brasiure married Arthur W. Townsend, with Elijah Rodgers as bondsman. Arthur was the son of Mary Bishop Townsend.
26 Nov 1832: Elizabeth Braisure married Ezekiel Dickerson with Arthur W. Townsend as bondsman. In 1850, Ezekiel and Elizabeth, ages 40 and 30 respectively, were living in Baltimore Hundred close to James Bishop, James and Elizabeth, Benton and Elizabeth, and James A. and Catherine Brasure.
12 Apr 1836: James Braisure married Soffee Hill.
25 Nov 1848: James W. Timmons married Lovy Brashier. Lovey was probably, but not certainly, the daughter of Littleton and Lydia Brasure.
19 Oct 1852: Hannah W. Brasure married Levin Bennett. This Hannah may have been the daughter of William Brasure by his first wife.
Feb 1850: Benton Brasure, age 70, died in Sussex County.
Sep 1850: Catherine Brasure died at age 9. She may have been the daughter of Littleton and Lydia Brasure. She was enumerated in the census only the month before. Her age then was listed as 7, but in Sussex County, the ages given in censuses were seldom correct.
17 Jul 1856: Beliath Brazier or Brasure married Basha Moore. According to Sharon Ford, this couple moved to Indiana. They are probably the William B. and Abasha Brazier enumerated in the 1880 Census in Stark County, IN, they and all but 2 of their six children born in DE.[3]
5 Aug 1857: Cathern Brasher was mentioned as legatee in the will of father James Moore in Dagsboro Hundred.[4] Was this Kitty Moore Brasure, wife of John L. Brasure?
Jun 1860: Twenty-eight year old Elisha Brasure died. He might've been the son of Benton and Effie Brasure.
1860 Census, Baltimore Hundred: Sarah Brasure age 30, born DE; Gennett 14. They were listed close to James Alfred Brasure, son of Mitchell and Sarah Hill Brasure. I'm unable to locate Sarah or little Gennett in the 1850 Census.
Apr 1870: Joshua B. Brasure died at age 4.
1870 Census, Sussex County, DE:
● Millsborough P.O. 28 July: Farmer William Brasure 34, born DE, with personal property worth $100; Martha 33, born DE; Loucinda 9; John W. Bunting 4; black farm laborer George Thurygood 18.[5]
● Baltimore Hundred, Shelbyville P.O. 6 June: Domestic servants George C. Brasure, age 17, and Nancy Brasure, age 17, residing in household of Armwell and Charlotte Morris. Both were born in DE.[6]
30 Dec 1874: Emeline Brasure married William R. Rogers at Sound United Methodist Church. Was she the daughter of William and Mary Hickman Brasure?
1880 Census, Dagsboro Hundred:
● Farmer John E. Davis 36, MD MD MD; Hettie C. 27, DE DE DE; Jonathan S. 2; servant Ida E. Brasure 15, DE DE DE.[7] Ida Brasure, a servant age 23, died on 28 Jun 1890 died in Georgetown, Sussex County. The cause of death was typhoid fever with "tuberculosis of lung".
● Laborer George Brasure 50, DE DE DE.[8] Is this the son of Godfrey and Lovey Hudson Brasure?
Jun 1880: Willie Brasure died, aged 4 months.
30 Dec 1908: William R. Brasure, age 23, a farmer in Dagsboro Hundred, married Anna Mitchell, 18, daughter of Marshall H. and Emmie Mitchell. William registered for the draft on 12 Sep 1918. A farmer in Millsboro, age 33, born 8 Oct 1884, married to Annie Brasure, he was described as tall, medium build, black eyes and hair, and no physical limitations. See also 1910 Census.
1910 Census, Sussex County, DE:
● 30 Apr: Truck farmer Nathaniel W. Evans 61, married for 32 years, DE DE DE; Martha A. 46, MD MD MD, mother of 6 children, 5 living; Estelle B. 16, DE DE MD, married for 2 months; son-in-law John B. Tyre 25, MD DE MD, with his "own income"; mother-in-law Annie Brasure 74, MD DE MD, a widow, mother of 6 children, 3 living.[9]
● 30 Apr: Farmer Daniel Dennis 50, MD MD MD, married for for 28 years; Elizabeth 53, DE DE DE, mother of 5 children, 5 living; Maggie 17, married for 1 year; Marie 13; son-in-law John Brasure 21, farm laborer.[10] They were listed close to . . . .
● 30 Apr: Farmer John Brasure 43, DE DE DE, married for 21 years; Annie 44, MD MD MD, mother of 8 children, 6 living; Charles 17, DE DE MD; Robert 16; Martha 14; Clarence 10.
● 6 May (District 6): Farmer William R. Brasure 25, DE DE DE, married for 16 months; Annie M. 20, mother of 1 child, still living; Granville R. 7 months.[11]
15 May 1910: Farmer Henry E. Brasure, born c. 1871, married Sarah L. Betts, daughter of Wingate and Mary Elliot. It was the second marriage for both.
24 Nov 1924: Martha Watson Brasure, a widow born 6 Sep 1836, died of "sende asthenia". She was the daughter of Isaac Warson and Nellie Vickers.
In Worcester County, MD: There was a long-running boundary dispute between the colonies of Delaware and Maryland, a dispute not settled until 1775. Before then, the approximately twelve miles on the southern side of Sussex County, DE was considered to be Worcester County, MD.
22 Aug 1733: Administratrix Ann Brasier submitted an inventory of the William Brasure estate as appraised by Robert Nairne and John White. James Mumford and James Mumford Brasier were listed as nearest of kin and James Mumford and Mary Hampton as creditors.[11a] Was Ann the child of James Mumford? Or was James Mumford Brasure her grandchild? See 20 Nov 1724, Somerset County. According to Marjorie Adams, moderator of "SelbyvilleHistoryandGenealogy" on Yahoo, James Mumford Brasure married Elizabeth Collins and had a son named William Collins Brasure. NEW 2 Sep 2010
1 Sep 1761: William Brashur and John Mumford were assigned pew numbers in the St. Martin's Meeting House.
1 May 1764: John and Richard Brazier were made vestrymen and William Brazher church warden at Prince George Chapel. This chapel was apparently located on the east side of Pepper Creek, a tributary of the Indian River just east of present-day Dagsboro, Sussex County, DE.
The 1783 Tax List included Godfrey Brashere, Belitha Brasure, and 3 William Brasures. Two of the Williams were listed in Buckingham and Worcester, one in Mattapony.
1800 Census, Mattapony Hundred:
John Brasure was listed with 2 males under 10, 1 16-26, 1 over 45; 1 female 16-26.[12] A second John Brasure was enumerated on p. 189, but with exactly the same ages and genders. Was that a mistake?
27 Jan 1809: John Brashier married Elizabeth Slaughtery.[13]
Between 1806 and 1813 Godrey Brasier, James Law Junior, and James W. Taylor witnessed the will of Mary Collins.[14]
1810 Census: William Brazier was listed with 2 males under 10, 1 10-16, 1 over 45; 2 females under 10, 1 26-45.[15]
1840 Census: Jesse Braiser was listed close by Comfort Bishop.
1850 Census: Jacob Brazier, age 11, born DE, enumerated in household of Asbery and Elizabeth Williams, ages 58 and 53.[16]
13 Jun 1854: Hester Brazier [spelling is not certain] married Lorenzo Powell.[17]
In Somerset County, MD: Somerset adjoins both Sussex County, DE and Worcester County, MD on the west.
20 Nov 1724: The will of Thomas Cox Senior left his entire estate to wife Ann during her lifetime, then to pass to her grandchild James Mumford Brazier. Witnesses: Alex Leckie and Thomas Leather.
21 Mar 1734/35: James Mumford Brazier (along with Henry Truitt) witnessed the will of John Linch Senior.[18]
22 Feb 1810: Levin Braisher married Elizabeth Hitchens.[19] According to Kat Balew, the son of Belitha Brasure, actually married Nancy Hitchens. Levin and Nancy moved to Kentucky, then Ohio. where they appeared on the 1860 Census, in Portsmouth, Scioto County. Edited 30 Aug 2011
14 Aug 1821: Sarah Brazier married Sampson Selby.[20] Sarah may have been a daughter of Godfrey Brasure.
In Accomack County, VA:
11 Feb 1749: Michael Rickards signed his will. Among his many behests was one to granddaughter Comfort Brazier.[21]
1936: A house belonging to Joshua Brasure was blown down in a severe gale.
And in Various Locations:
Robert Brasier was born in Avignon, France, but had immigrated to the area of the Nansemond River in Virginia by 24 Nov 1637. He died c. 1665 in Calvert County, Maryland.
