Miscellaneous Gaughs (and a few Givins)

 

 

Since I'm loathe to toss notes that might be beneficial to researchers of other families . . .

 

 

 

In Prince George’s County, Maryland:

 

 

                27 Jan 1725: William Goe, supposedly born in Scotland, married Mary Boyd, daughter of John Boyd, in Queen Anne’s Parish, Prince George’s County, the ceremony being performed by Jacob Henderson.  They had children Margaret (19 Aug 1727) and William (4 Aug 1729 in Prince George’s).  According to Grace Painter,  Mary Boyd had married Ishmael Bateman in 1704 so William was her second husband.

                28 Nov 1754: William Goe, no doubt William Junior, son of William and Mary Boyd Bateman Goe, married Dorcus Turner, daughter of John and Elizabeth Brashears Turner; the ceremony being performed by George Murdock.  They had children Elizabeth (20 Nov 1755), Mary (21 Jan 1757), Margaret (26 Apr 1758), John (26 Apr 1760), Dorcas (30 Sep 1761), William (27 Jun 1763), Rachel (25 Mar 1765), Phillip (24 Mar 1767), Eleanor (12 Sep 1768), Henry Bateman Goe (14 Jun 1770), Turner (22 Jan 1772), Richard Hutton (12 Jan 1775), Samuel (2 Oct 1776), and Hezekiah Goe (1 Sep 1778).  This William Goe, husband of Dorcas, died 27 Mar 1824 in Brownsville, Fayette County, PA, where he'd purchased a town lot in 1794.  Son Phillip married Rebecca Boone c. 1788 in NC.  They had son named Noble Goe.  Phillip died March 1805 in Nicholas, KY.[1]  Some of these Goes are included below.

In Frederick County, Maryland:

 

               

                Christian Gaugh, who died before 23 Sep 1755, was supposedly the father of Christopher Gaugh.

                In 1796 Philip Gauff appeared on a list of voters in the presidential election, Frederick County, Maryland.[2]

                1800 Census, Frederick County, MD:

        Christopher Gaugh: 3 males; 3 females

                                George Gaugh: 1 male; 3 females

10 Jun 1810: John Gaugh, administrator of the Christopher Gaugh estate, submitted his accounts.  The distribution of said estate was divided between Christopher's widow, not named, and Philip, George, John, Michael, Elizabeth Shyrock, Phebe Gaugh, Eve Letherman, and the heirs of Abraham Gaugh.

 

 

 

In Other Maryland Counties:

 

 

                In 1776 several Gaughs signed the Oath of Allegiance in St. Mary’s County.           

                1790 Census, Patapsco Lower Hundred, Baltimore County:

Henary Gaugh,  11 males, 8 females, 33 slaves, p. 193   All the Henrys are spelled that way.  It was apparently just the spelling eccentricities of the census taker.

John Gaugh, 1 male and 1 female 

Henary Gaugh, 2 males, 4 females, 9 slaves

John Given, p. 210  There’s also a John Given in Mine Run Hundred, p. 69.

               

 

 

In Bedford County, Pennsylvania: Formed 1771 from Cumberland

 

                William Gaff appeared on the 1773 Tax List, Air Township, Bedford County.  In 1774 he was listed as William Geff; in 1775 and 1776, as William Gaff again.  In the 1779 list, there were two William Gaffs, one with 55 acres, and one with 149 acres, 3 horses and 5 cattle.   It became Fulton County in 1850.

                                Air Twp, Neal Gaugh, 1 male under 10, 1 26-45; 3 females under 10, 1 16-26, 1 over 45, p. 548 

                1820 Census:

Air Twp, Neal Gaugh, 1 male 10-15, 2 over 45, p. 53

Tawanda Twp, R. Gaugh and William Gaugh, p. 114

1830 Census ( Air Twp): Neal Gaugh, p. 14

1840 Census (West Providence): Cornelius Gaugh, 1 male 60-70; 1 female 20-30, 1 50-60, p. 257

               

 

 

In Fayette County, Pennsylvania: Formed 1783 from Westmoreland

 

 1780: In a petition to form a new state, were the names of John, William, and William Goe Junior

                In the 1785 Fayette Tax List, William Goe Senior, William Goe Junior, and John Goe were all listed in Washington Township.  They were also listed in 1786.  This is the family from Prince George's County, MD.

                William Given, from Ireland, was living in Washington township from 1795-1798, residing close to both the Goes and James Patterson.  William obtained his U.S. citizenship on 13 Sep 1802 and the next day vouched for James Hill, another Irishman was seeking citizenship.[2a]

                1800 Census, Washington Township:

Henry B. Goe, 1 male 16-25, 1 26-44; 1 female 26-44; 2 other free persons.  This is Henry Bateman Goe, son of William and Dorcas Turner Goe.

William Goe Junior, 2 males under 10, 1 26-44, 1 over 45; 3 females under 10, 3 10-15, 2 16-25, 1 26-44.

William Goe Senior, 1 male under 10, 2 16-25, 1 over 45; 1 female under 10, 1 over 45; 6 other free persons; 4 slaves.

William Givin, 3 males under 10, 1 16-25, 1 26-44; 1 female under 10, 1 10-15, 1 16-25, 1 26-44.

                1801: Polly Given married Capt. James Patterson.  She was described as “a young woman employed in Jonathan Sharpless family, to whom she had come from Brownsville”, but had been born in Ireland.[3]    James and Mary Given Patterson had at least two children: William G. and Sarah, and may have been the parents of Jeremiah and James.   Mary may have been a daughter of William Given, who lived close by.   According to Tom Humphrey, Mary Given's husband James Patterson was born c. 1765, the son of William and Mary McCormick Patterson. He died in 1827

1802: William Goe was listed in the Redstone Tax List.  In 1807 Henry and William Goe Senior were listed, as was Musham Gaw.  In 1808, the latter was Mersham Gaw.

19 Jun 1809: The will of Tunis Wells of Washington Township named Henry Bateman Goe and James Patterson as executors.  Tunis had land adjoining James Patterson.[4]

Joseph Gew, 1 male under 10; 1 over 45; 2 females under 10, 1 16-26, 1 over 45.

Christian Tarr and John Tarr are in Union Township.

 

                1820 Census: Our John is in Washington Township.  In George's Township are:

John Gough, 1 male under 10, 2 10-15, 1 16-25, 1 over 45; 1 female 16-26, 1 over 45; 3 persons in agriculture

Jacob Gaugh, 2 males under 10, 1 16-18, 1 16-25, 1 26-45; 1 female under 10, 1 26-45; 2 persons in agriculture.

 

                In the 1827 Redstone Tax List: Blacksmith James Gaugh, $40.  (Is this James Patterson Gaugh?)

 

 

 

In Crawford County, Pennsylvania:

 

 

                9 Apr 1832: Along with Andrew Downey and Estal Yetman, William Gaugh witnessed the will of Rachel Collins of North Shenango, Crawford County, PA.[5]  Who is this William Gaugh?  John and Esther's son William was only three years old that year.  John and Esther Gaugh's daughter Jane married Isiah Collins.

                13 Mar 1854: Along with James S. Shillito, Mary Gaugh witnessed a deed from our John and Esther Gaugh to John Given in Hartford Township.[6]

1860 Census, Stewartsville, Crawford County: James Gaw, age 13, was enumerated in the household of William and Mary Alexander and daughter Esther M.[6a]

                7 Jan 1889: Dora Gaugh was listed as a member of the North Shenango United Presbyterian Church.  (Was this “Dorr Gaugh”, the son of Alexander M. Gaugh?)

               

 

 

Other Locations in Pennsylvania:

 

                9 Jul 1753: James Gaugh married Catherine Gilberts in Swede's Church, Philadelphia, PA.[7]

William Gaff was listed on the 1773 Tax List in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, PA.  He was also listed in 1786, along with another William Gaff in South Hempfield, James Gaff in Mount Pleasant, and John McGaw in Donnegal Township.  Westmoreland was formed in 1773 from Bedford.

William Gaugh was listed on the 1781 Tax List in Robinson Township, Washington County with 300 acres, 2 horses, and 3 cattle.  Washington was formed in 1781 from Westmoreland.

10 Sep 1785: Charles Gaugh of Augusta signed will his naming wife Catherine, children John and Catherine.[8]

                In 1786 Caleb Gough appeared on the Tax List in Armstrong Township, Westmoreland County.

                In the 1790 Census, John Gaff was enumerated in Franklin County with 1 male over 16, 1 under 16, 5 females, and no slaves.  John Gaw was listed in Cumberland County with 2 males over 16 and 2 females[9] 

                In the Washington County Census of 1800, the following taxables were listed: William McGaw in Buffalo Township, John Gaut in Hopewell Township, William Gaw in Nottingham Township, and Andrew Gaut in Strabane Township. 

21 May 1828: Thomas Gough wed Susanna Mullen at Trinity Protestant Episcopal Church in Pittsburg, PA. 

 

 

 

In Virginia:    

 

31 May 1688: William Gough married Alice Thacker in Middlesex County.

1762: Elizabeth Gouge married Onesiphorus Harvey.[10]

1 Oct 1766: Thomas Gaugh married, bride's name unrecorded.[11] 

28 Jul 1795: Robert Gough married Fanwell Dameron.[12] 

 

 

 

Elsewhere:

               

                1829: In Grant County, KY,  Mahala Gaugh married William Brown, whose family had moved to KY from Washington County, PA.  When Brown died, Francis Gaugh was serving as his administrator on 13 Jun 1835.  Mahala Gaugh Brown married William P. Thomas in 1838 in Grant County.[13]  Grant is relatively close to Campbell County, to which Boyd Gaugh moved before 1850.

                11 Nov 1837: George W. Gaugh married Patsy Jane Smith in Preble County, OH.

1850 Agricultural Census, Lee Township, Platte County, MO:  John Gaugh was listed with 25 improved, 65 unimproved acres valued at $900; implements valued at $125; 2 horses, 2 mules, 4 milk cows, 2 oxen, 10 cattle, 25 swine, the total livestock estimated at $530; 60 bushels of wheat worth $1,000; Indian corn $150, Irish potatoes; 730 llbs of butter; $75 in slaughtered animals.

In Grant County, KY, we find the following marriages: 

                10 Oct 1851: Letitia Gaugh – M. J. Simpson

                9 May 1851: Nancy Jane Gaugh – Robert Vance

                21 Jan 1853: Elizabeth Ann Gaugh – Andrew Sheriff

1880 Census, St. Joseph, Buchanan Co, MO: Inco Gaugh age 50, MO MO MO; Margaret 40, OH OH OH; David 16, MO MO OH; Mary 14, MO MO OH.  In the 1890 St. Joseph Directory: David Gaugh, "wks St. Joe Water Works", no address; and Thomas Gaugh, truckman, CRI&PRR, rooms at Chicago House.

1880 Soundex in MO: George B. Gaugh 64, born KY; wife Ann 42, born KY; Robert, Rice, Anna, William, Agnes, Leslie, George B. and Henry Gaugh.  There is also a listing for James B. Gaugh 30, born MO.

 

 

 

 

The Percival Gaughs

 

                Percival Gaugh (b. 2 Jul 1806 in Lexington, KY, d. 9 Jul 1888 in Kansas City, MO) was the son of Michael and Sarah White Gaugh of Frederick County, MD.  (Michael was in turn the son of Christopher Gaugh of Frederick County, MD.)  Percival married Julia MeGowan on 12 Jun 1832 in Lexington, the family moving to Kansas City, MO, where Percival was a noted architect, between 1856 and 1860.  Percival and Julia Gaugh had children: James Percival (b. 24 Dec 1836, d. 17 Mar 1900 in Kansas City, MO); Sarah Louise (b. 24 May 1839, d. 1927, m. John McReynolds in Bloomington, IL in 1853); Jeremiah Frazier (b. 10 Dec 1841, d. 4 Aug 1843), Charles Edwin (b. 4 Dec 1843, d. 1926 in San Diego, CA), William Whitney; Richard Pindell (b. 20 Oct 1848, d. 15 Apr 1900 in Kansas City, MO); Julia Ellen (b. 7 Oct 1850, d. 6 Mar 1852); George Graves (b.  8 Sep 1853, d. 12 Sep 1922 in Kansas City, MO); Joseph Clark Gaugh (b. 7 Apr 1856, d. 1930); Thomas Lockridge (b. 15 Jan 1860 in Kansas City, MO, d. 1 Jul 1917 in Kansas City, MO).
