Possibly Troublesome Hendersons

Thanks to the diligence of Dennis Henderson, we're able to reveal the first comparison of Y-DNA results between a descendant of Richard Henderson of Troublesome Creek and Samuel Henderson (1700-1783), founder of the "Granville Hendersons".  The results indicate a close relationship and the two contributors have been placed in the same "family" group in the Clan Henderson DNA Project.  While awaiting deeper results, we can still comfortably affirm that the Hendersons of Troublesome Creek and Granville County shared a common male ancestor either on this continent or shortly before their emigration from Scotland.  In order for these findings to be confirmed, additional Y-DNA results from Troublesome Creek male descendants should be tested by Family Tree DNA and submitted to the Clan Henderson DNA Project and this website.  If interested, contact me at nancy@nancysdeadrelatives.com.

In Rockingham County, NC:

Jul 1792: John and Henry Henderson were sworn in as Grand Jurors.[2]  Who was Henry Henderson?

22 Aug 1803: A deed from Isaac Whitworth to Watson Gentry for land adjoining James Scales, Joshua Smith, and James Sharp was witnessed by Thomas (x) Henderson and Thomas Rogers.[3]  The Jacob’s Creek Thomas was literate.  Did I make a mistake about the mark, or was this another Thomas entirely?

19 Dec 1818: William Henderson was bondsman for the marriage of Charles Baker and Hailey Morgan.[4]  This could be our William or William, the son of Pleasant, the grandson of Sheriff Samuel.  The latter, born 1789, may have already moved to TN.  Nathaniel Henderson, the son of Sheriff Samuel, married a widowed Charlotte Morgan.  Charles Baker lived on Troublesome Creek.

2 Feb 1820: Lucy Henderson married Robert Brown, with Lewis Stone as bondsman.[5]

c. 1822 Thomas Henderson either granted or was granted power of attorney to or by Burgess Stone.[6]

1829: James Henderson purchased 222 acres on Little Troublesome Creek from Andrew Wray.[7]

19 Dec 1829: Mary B. Henderson wed Owen McAleer, with William Kerr as bondsman.[8]

21 Sep 1833: Lucretia V. Henderson married Jefferson Hudson, with Milton Lemmon as bondsman.  Lucretia was a member of Speedwell Church that year, as were many of the Troublesome Creek Hendersons and Lemonds.[9]

12 Sep 1840: Richard Henderson married Violet Brown, with Quinton S. Purcell as bondsman.  Both Brown and Purcell are names associated with the Moores and Lemonds of Troublesome Creek.[10]  This Richard must have been at least middle-aged as Violet Brown was born in 1796 and died in 1842.[11]

22 Apr 1840: Thomas Henderson, indebted to Pendleton Ratliff for $33.17, mortgaged “1 cast & slears, 1 gray mare, 1 bug leott, 1 cow & calf” and all of his farming utensils.  Payment was due 25 Dec 1840.[12]

18 Nov 1844: Along with Whitfield Winchester, John Henderson witnessed a deed from John J. Reed to Anselm Reed for 800 acres on the waters of Big Troublesome Creek adjoining Henry Moore, John C. Murray, deceased, Winny Thomas, Thomas Parker, James Irvin, James D. Patrick, Henderson D. Moore, and Levin Moore.  John, son of Troublesome Richard, was already residing in Wayne, IN in 1840.  So who was this John Henderson?  Henderson Moore was the son of Henry Moore and Jean Henderson.

24 Mar 1869: John M. Henderson bought 3 acres on the waters of Troublesome Creek between the roads to Eagle Falls and Wentworth from David and Alice Purcell for $30.  Witnesses: Samuel P. Mitchell and John R. Shreves.[13]
