Slaves Mentioned by Name in Johnston Records
Slaves inventoried in the estate of Joseph Johnston, deceased, on 4 Aug 1845 were "divided" into equal shares, which were then allotted to the various heirs in December. Because these "lots" may represent family groups, they are listed here under their new owners. And because (and only because) their description as "man" or "boy", "woman" or "girl" is an clue to their age, those descriptions are also included when no other indication of age can be found.
Any birth or death dates that appear were taken from the family bible of Stephen Darden Johnston.
If you have any corrections or additional material on any of the people below, please contact me at nancy@nancysdeadrelatives.com.
To Mary Darden Johnston, who actually received two "lots":
BRADFORD, born 18 May 1814.
BIRD, "man". On 24 Feb 1866, Byrd Johnston married Amanda Dobbin. Was that man this former slave?
JENNY, "girl".
MILLRY (or Milbrey), "girl". She may or may not have been the Milley who was born 15 Jan 1835.
MOURNING, born 17 Aug 1787. Mary Darden Johnston died in 1862, but in her will, she left $500 to son Stephen Darden Johnston to support Mourning for her lifetime.
PALINA, "invalid".
ESSEX, "man".
GEORGE, born 1 Jun 1831.
MARSHAL, willed by Mary Darden Johnston to her son Stephen Darden Johnston. On 25 Dec 1869 a Marshall Johnston married Essie Johnston.
To Nancy Johnston Prewitt (Pruitt), wife of Jacob M. Prewitt:
ISOM
AMY, "woman", with her child "ANTOYNETT".
NAPOLEON, "boy".
PRESTON, "boy".
To James F. Johnston:
BEN, born 15 Jan 1800.
ROY CRAWFORD, "man".
JANE, "woman", purchased by Joseph Johnston from John Green on 22 Mar 1841 when she was about sixteen years old. There may have been two Janes, however, because when a slave named "Jane" was given to Benjamin and Sarah Johnston Dockery on 1 Jan 1843, she was described as "thirteen in April next". That Jane was returned to Joseph Johnston upon Sarah's death in 1844.
MARY, born 25 Mar 1833.
MASON, born 1806, "invalid".
To Alfred Dockery, son of Benjamin H. Dockery and Sarah Johnston:
DAVY, "man".
NEATY, born 2 Apr 1819, with her unnamed child.
SUSAN
BRADFORD, "boy".
To Mary S. Denty, daughter of Matilda Johnston and John Ramsey Denty:
KINARD, born 1804, purchased by Joseph Johnston in Limestone County, AL on 12 Dec 1821 from Joseph Ellis. On 2 Apr 1870 Kinard Johnston wed Patience Johnston. Were they the same individual?
SEABORN, "man".
ANNA (or Annie). There were apparently two Annies, one born 1805, and one born 1808.
MARTHA, "girl".
VIOLET, born 5 Apr 1842.
OCTAVIA, born 15 Oct 1843.
To Jesse Johnston:
RIDICK (or Redick), "man".
LITTLE AMY, "woman", and her unnamed child.
LOUISA, "girl".
To Stephen Darden Johnston:
JEFFERSON ("Jeff"), "man".
HENRY, "man".
AARON, "man".
To Elizabeth Johnston Wilburn, wife of John King Wilburn:
JACOB, "man". There may have been two Jacobs, as the Jacob who was listed in the bible as born 7 Feb 1828 seems young to have been labeled a "man" in December 1845.
CRECY Could this be Currey, who was born on 15 Jan 1832?
PEYTON (or Payton), born 13 Jan 1833.
To Samuel Johnston:
WASHINGTON, b. 4 Jun 1828, given to Benjamin and Sarah Johnston Dockery on 1 Jan 1843 "about fifteen in June next", but returned to Joseph Johnston upon Sarah's death in 1844. On 28 Sep 1867 a Washington Johnston wed Tennessee Johnston. Was it this Washington?
TRUMAN, "man".
IRIN, "man".
Listed below are slaves whose births and death were recorded in the Stephen Darden Johnston family bible, but who cannot be accounted for in the estate division in 1845. In the bible, there is one page for births and another for deaths. Where the name is identical on both pages, and that individual does not appear in the inventory or division of the Joseph Johnston estate in 1845, they are assumed to be the same.
AEON, born 19 Jul 1834.
ALECK, born 1802 .
AUGUSTA, died Jan 1827.
BEDDY, born Aug 1804, given to John and Matilda Johnston Denty on 19 Oct 1836 when about 32 years old.
BEDIE, born 18 Feb 1802.
BIGLER, born 15 Feb 1825. May be synonymous with BRISTER.
BILL, born 1 Feb 1822.
BRISTER, given to John and Matilda Johnston Denty on 19 Oct 1836 when about ten years old. He may be the "Bigler" born 15 Feb 1825.
CAROLINE, born 24 Jun 1822, given at age five to Elizabeth and John Wilburn.
CRAWFORD, born 25 Feb 1836.
CURREY, born 15 Jan 1832. Could this actually be Crecy, who was allotted to Elizabeth Johnston Wilburn in 1845?
EADY, born 19 Feb 1824.
EGAR, born 15 Apr 1823.
ELBERT, born 1 Oct 1836. It's conceivable that he was the Elbert given to John and Matilda Johnston Denty on 19 Oct 1836, although unlikely unless his mother was Biddy, age 32, also given to them that day.
FRANCES HAGON, died 26 May 1842.
HENDERSON, born 18 Feb 1816; died 25 Jun 1845.
IRENE, born 19 Apr 1830.
ISOM, died 1788. This is the only birth date before 1827. Was it instead Isom's birth year, written on the wrong page?
JACOB, born 7 Feb 1828.
JAMES HENRY, died 2 Sep 1834.
JESSE, born Jun 1827.
JIM, died 25 Mar 1841.
JOHN, born 25 Dec 1811; was probably the John willed to Joseph Johnston by Samuel Johnston in 1832 Limestone County, AL.
JOHN NAPOLEON, died 22 Aug 1838.
LEITEGA, died 22 Aug 1838.
LEVI, born 26 Mar 1841.
L. FREEMAN, died 10 May 1844.
LITTLE DICK PETER, born 8 Oct 1825. (The name implies that there was a "Big Dick Peter" as well.)
L. (S.) BRADFORD, died 14 Jan 1843.
LUCY, born 1806, given (along with her two children LAVINA, aged about 28 months, and REUBEN, aged about 4 years) to Jacob and Nancy Johnston Prewitt on 10 Feb 1836 when "about thirty years old".
MARSHALL, died 6 Jan 1838.
MARTHA JANE, died 13 Feb 1840.
MILLEY, born 15 Jan 1835, died 16 Jan 1837.
NARCISSA, died 31 Dec 1840.
NIECY, died Jan 1827.
PATIENCE, born 2 May 1825. On 2 Apr 1870 a Patience Johnston married Kinard Johnston.
PEPPY SANFORD, died 23 Oct 1840.
REBECCA, born 25 Jan 1831, died 30 Mar 1845.
SAM, born 5 Jan 1829.
SARAH ATOINET, died 19 Mar 1844.
STONEY, born 25 Dec 1812.
SUSAN, died 21 Jan 1840.
And the following slaves were named in other Johnston wills, deeds, or inventories:
ABRAM, mentioned in will of Samuel Johnston in Limestone County, AL in 1832. Sold to James Bailey of Madison County, AL on 16 Mar 1833 for $366.
ANGUS, adult male given to Jesse Johnston by Joseph Johnston on 2 Jan 1845.
ANNIE There were apparently two, one born 1805, and one born 1808. One of these women was probably the "Anna" allotted to Mary S. Denty in December 1845.
DICY On 5 Jan 1782, Elizabeth Ballenger Johnston had received "one negro girl Dicy" in a deed of gift from her father, Joseph Ballenger, in Pittsylvania County, VA. In 1832, Elizabeth's husband, Samuel Johnston, willed that Dicy should live wherever and with whomever she wished. It is not known who she chose. Are they the same woman?
ELBERT, given to John and Matilda Johnston Denty on 19 Oct 1836 when a small child.
FREEMAN, was inventoried in the estate of Joseph Johnston on 4 Aug 1845, but was not named as such in the allotments of December 1846. On 17 Jan 1880 a man named Freeman Johnston married Georgia Young.
LIZZIE, purchased from John Ramsey Denty and given by Joseph Johnston to Matilda Johnston Denty on 1 Jan 1845.
MILLY, given to John and Matilda Johnston Denty on 19 Oct 1836 when a small child. She may be the "Milley" who was born 15 Jan 1835 and died 16 Jan 1837.
