Miscellaneous Jones in Rutherford County, TN and Wake County, NC

The notes below notes were gathered in my partially successful attempt to sort out my Jones family in Rutherford County.    They weren't gathered with the idea of public distribution, nor were they ever intended to be comprehensive.  Thus some aren't as complete as they could or should be and much of the information is unverifiedIn spite of that, this file has been included in the hope that even the tiniest snippet might help another researcher.

When entire families emerged, they were placed in Some Early Jones Families in Rutherford County.  Some material may appear in both files, but not all.  Those browsing should therefore check both files.

There is a FamilyTree DNA Jones Project.

1810 Census: Jones Heads of Households . . .[1]

 Jefferson Township:

         David, 3 1 0 0 1 - 3 2 0 1 - 0 7

         Nicholas, 4 2 1 0 1 - 0 1 0 1 0  [p. 29]  There’s no other mention of this man.  A typo?

Nashville Township:

      Wiley, 1 0 0 1 0 - 0 0 1 0 0 - 0 0  Enumerated by Jesse Ward, close to Henry Miller and not far from Robert Warnick and Henry McPeak.

      Jonathan, 2 0 0 1 0 - 2 0 0 1 0  [p. 42]

GRS also has Julius (1 0 1 0 0 - 2 0 1 0 0) and Thomas (0 1 1 1 0 - 0), but does not have Llue.  Was the latter transcribed as Julius by GRS?  Thomas died in 1815.

The following Jones supposedly paid taxes in 1810 but were omitted from the census: Aran, Arnett, Edmond, Lewellan, and WilliamBut surely Llewellyn is listed on that census as Llue.  See above.

My Darling and Margaret Miller Jones Had moved to Weakley County, TN in 1844.  Thus, my notes on the various Joneses in Rutherford County are extremely spotty after 1850.

5 Nov 1850: Julia Ann Jones married Nathan W. Hendrix.  John and Margaret Jones of Versailles District had a daughter named Julia Ann, age 15 on 8 Nov 1850, who eventually married Robert Spurlock.  While a marriage to Nathan Hendrix is possible, there is no family tradition of  Julia Jones Spurlock having been married twice.

In the 1850s, the settlement of the Bedford Jones estate named minor heir Lillitia Jones.  The will had first been recorded in 1848.[90]  Bedford was the son of Willis Jones.

4 Jun 1855: Administration of the Delilah Jones estate was granted to Henry J. Jones.  To judge from the 1850 Census, he was her husband.[91]

7 Jul 1857: James Ezra Jones died at age 29.  Administration of the estate was granted to E. H. Jones and J. R. Overall on 3 Aug 1857.[92]  Was this the son of Enoch H. and the grandson of Ezra?

4 Jul 1860 Census, Rutherford County, TN (Jefferson P.O.): Farmer A. Jones 5_, boen TN, with real and personal property valued at $28,000 and $27,000; female W. age 53, born NC; John Jones, age 24, superintending the far; merchant A. age 22; male W. 19; male A. 17; Robert 15; S. P. Jones 32, with personal property worth $4,500; W. Steward 65, a mulatto.  They are residing next to the Thomas Miller family.  Thomas was the son of Henry and Rachel Miller.  Who is this man?  He doesn't seem to be Anderson Jones, son of William Jones, as that man was residing with brother Robert S. Jones in 1860.[92a]

In 1873 “Capt” John Jones was still alive, over age 80.[93]

18 Nov 1878: Mrs. Lizzie H. Jones, widow of Amzi Jones, died.  She was born 23 Sep 1846, the daughter of Alfred and Narcissa Bradford MillerShe’s shown, age four, in the Miller household in 1850.  Amzi was orphaned at a young age and was adopted by his half-brother Dr. George Jones.  He lived in Memphis until 1870.[94]

In Wake County, North Carolina:

My theory is that Matthew Jones of Rutherford County, TN was closely related to the Darling Jones of Wake County, NC and Washington County, TN.  The latter's family has many names in common with our Jones or with families residing in Rutherford County, TN, italicized below.  But if there was a relationship, I've been unable to discover it.

July 1785: Nathaniel Jones bought three parcels, two from John Smith and one from Brittain Smith.[95]

1787: Albridgton Jones signed his will naming wife Mary and children William, Willis, Jemima, and Penny Hardy Jones.  Albridgton was the son of Francis and Mary Ridley Jones.  Francis and Mary had children Francis, Nathaniel, Tignal (died 26 Aug 1807 in Raleigh),  John, Matthew, Albridgton, Ridley, Mary, Judith, Betty Day Jones, Lydia, Jemima, and Lucy Jones.[96]  There was a Willis, a Hardy, a Penny, our William, our Matthew, and a Nathaniel Jones in Rutherford County, TN.

16 Jul 1788: Reuben Hunter sold property to Nathaniel Jones.[97]  We have Hunters closely associated with our Jones family in Rutherford County, TN.

1790 Census . . .

         John,  3 – 4 – 4 – 0 – 0

(There's also a John Orr with 2 – 3 – 3 – 0 – 0.)

31 Jan 1797: Sally Kimbrough married Matthew Jones with Henry Jones as Bondsman .  Sally, who was born 1765-1770 and died 6 Sep 1808, was the daughter of Nathaniel Kimbrough and Mary Alston.  Matthew, born 29 Aug 1768 and died 9 Nov 1843, was the son of Nathaniel Jones and Anna Snickers.  There are many Jones-Kimbrough marriages.  James Kimbrough married Margaret Jones, for instance.  Also in this line are many Hunters, Berrys, and Thorns. (See 1810, Wake County.)  Kimbros, Thorns, Hunters, and Berrys lived in close proximity in Rutherford.

In 1798 Nathaniel Jones became the father of triplet daughters: Delia (called Delly or Dilly, married Joseph Woodard, son of Pleasant Woodard), Dolia (called Dolly, married Anderson Taylor), and Dicey (married Anderson Taylor after Dolly’s death).  Their younger brother, born 1803, was Abel Jones, who died in 1825.    Abel Jones of Weakley County, TN is very likely another son of Matthew and Sarah Jones.  It is not a common name.

22 Jan 1800: Nathaniel Jones Senior deeded land to Mathew Jones.[98]

March 1800: William Jones left will naming Winifred, Anderson, Riddick, Syntha, Young, Mary, and Ethelred.[99]   William Jones of Fall Creek named a son Anderson.

On the 1800 Census, there are Jones families on pages 739-743, 746.  They include: 4 named Lewis, 1 Mathew, 3 Nathaniels, 1 Solomon, 3 Williams, 2 Willies, and 1 Giles.

5 Sep 1800: Nathaniel Jones purchased land from Isaac Hunter Senior.[100]   See also 9 Oct 1803, 12 Oct 1807, 25 Jan 1808, 22 May 1830, and 18 Jan 1844.

28 Sep 1801: Darling Jones (born 1777 in NC) married Margaret Watson in Wake with Alexander Carter as bondsman.[101]  This couple later moved to Robertson, then Henry County, TN.  See also Jones: Some Other Darlings.

16 Nov 1801: Lewis Jones signed his will (probated 1815) naming wife America (nee Barnes, born 1764 in Edgecomb County, NC), and children Nathaniel, William, Lewis, Frances, Susanna, Levy, Rebecca (m. Franks), Mary (m. Short), and Nancy Jones (m. Northington). Witnesses: Augustus Turner, John (x) Segraves, and Pleasant Woodward.  Lewis was “probably the brother of William Jones of Middle Creek”.   Now Lewis and America were supposedly the parents of  the Washington County Darling Jones, who was still alive in 1801.  Why isn’t he in the will?

1802: Darling Jones was the bondsman for the marriage of Mathew Jones and Sally Jones in Wake.  Witness: S. Turner.[102]

9 Oct 1803: Nathaniel Jones Junior purchased land from Isaac Hunter Senior.[103]

10 Jun 1806: Harbord Smith sold land to Solomon Jones.[104]   See 23 Mar 1807.

23 Mar 1807: Solomon Jones purchased land from Harbert Smith.[105]   See 10 Jun 1806.

12 Oct 1807: Nathaniel Jones purchased property from Isaac Hunter Senior.[106]

25 Jan 1808: Nathaniel Jones bought property from Reuben Hunter.[107]

February 1810 Nathaniel Jones Senior left will naming Nathaniel, Albridgeton, Henry, Annah, and Mathew.[108]  Nathaniel was married to Ann Snickers, born in Snickers Creek, Frederick County, VA.

26 May 1825: Nathaniel Jones deeded property to Abel Jones.[109]

24 Jun 1826: Darling Jones married Pency Collins with Alexander S. Collins as bondsman.[110]

22 May 1830: Kimbrough Jones purchased property from Henry Hunter.[111]

15 May 1833 and 30 Sep 1833: Joseph Jones bought land from Jesse Thorne.[112]  Thorns and Joneses intermarried several times in Rutherford County.

9 Mar 1839: Matthew Jones purchased property from _ F. Smith.[113]

November 1840 Theophilus Hunter signed his will naming Wesley and Alfred Jones.[114]

18 Jan 1844: Nathaniel Jones bought property from Isaac Hunter.[115]
