*Robert A. Jones Dies at Home of his Son

Mr. Robert A. Jones, 81, died rather suddenly this morning at 5 0'clock at the home of his son, Richmond Jones, one mile north of Murfreesboro on the Lebanon road.  Mr. Jones was taken ill with an attack of his heart yesterday afternoon.  A physician was summoned and the patient soon rallied.  He was stricken again early this morning, when the physician was again summoned, but too late to stay the hand of the grim monster death.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bettie Sanders Jones, one son, Richmond Jones, and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  He was the scion of a pioneer family of the county, being a son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Jones, who were long prominent residents of the Smyrna vicinity.  Mr. Jones was the last child of his forebears.  He was up to a few years ago, when frail health made its decree, a leading farmer and livestock trader.  For some time he and his wife have resided in Smyrna, coming to the home of their son about five weeks ago.  He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was most highly esteemed by his neighbors and friends.  Funeral services will be conducted at the home of Mr. Richmond Jones on the Lebanon road Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. F. L. Noel of Nashville.  The interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.  The following nephews of the deceased will act as pall-bearers: John Jones, Epps Sanders, Daniel Sanders, Sumner Sanders, Jesse Sanders, Elwood Sanders, Andrew Jones, Martin Jones and John Bell.[7]

John C. Jones

8 Mar 1813: John was born in Tennessee.[8]  Could his middle initial stand for "Cunningham"?

11 Feb 1835: John married Rachel Barber in Rutherford County, with A. East as the surety.[9]

7 Jan 1841: He was  among the buyers at the estate sale of Cunningham Smith.

24 Sep 1850 Census, Rutherford County, TN (Jefferson District): Merchant John Jones 37, born TN, with property valued at $3,600; Rachel 35, born TN; John W. age 14; Elizabeth 5; Peter M. Leath 22, working as a clerk; Susan E. Smith 18; Aurelia F. Lannom 7.[10]

Rachel must have died not long after the census, as John married Lacy A. Richardson on 28 Oct 1851.

4 Aug 1860 Census, Rutherford County, TN (Murfreesboro P.O.): Farmer John Jones 47, born TN, with real and personal property worth $10,880 and $30,998; Lucy 37; Elizabeth 16; Edwin 7; an unnamed one year old female; James L______, a laborer, age 20; Mary Richardson 16.[11]

Children* of John and Lucy Richardson Jones:

Edwin [or Edward] Jones (c. 1853 -     )

Tennessee Ellen Jones

*It would seem from the various censuses that Lucy was a widow with two children when she married John.  Those children were Mary and James Richardson.  This is only my speculation, it has not been verified.  The only problem with this theory is the 1860 Census, i.e. where is James Richardson?

Jones.  Anderson had no real property listed, but had personal property estimated at $8,000.[16]  There was also an A. Jones and family enumerated two weeks previously in the Jefferson Post Office area next to Thomas Miller.

Anderson couldn't be found on the 1870 Census unless . . .  Could he be the Anderson Jones 56, house carpenter born TN, with real and personal property valued at $500 and $150; Elizabeth 56, born KY; and Margrete 25; Jonathan 19, born TN; Eliza J. 15, born TN; Martin __, born TN?  This family was residing in Linton, Trigg County, KY.
