Miller: Generation 3

Some Children of Henry Miller & Rachel Drennan

John W. Miller & Christiana Bolware

23 Oct 1804: John was born in Tennessee.[1]   In light of his son's name, John Waddel Miller, was "Waddel" also John's middle name?

24 Dec 1810: Christiana Bolware was born in Bavaria.[2]  Family tradition has claimed that her parents died on the boat coming from Amsterdam.    She was then raised by Capt. Henry Dickson [or Dickerson or Dickenson]  in New Orleans.[3]   Amsterdam was simply the port from which the Bolwares would have sailed.  It does not contradict a birth in Bavaria.

24 Oct 1827: John W. Miller of Williamson County purchased 237 acres and 50 poles on Falling Creek, an eastern branch of Stones River, adjoining Robert Smith and Warnack, from James Miller of White County for $250.  The deed stated that the parcel had originally purchased from John McPeak.  Witnesses: Henry Miller and Hiram A. Drennan, both of whom proved the deed on 11 Aug 1829.[4]  The grantor was probably John's younger brother James.  Hiram Drennan was the son of Thomas Drennan, Rachel Drennan Miller's brother. John McPeak was the probably the son of Rachel's sister Ester Miller McPeck, and thus another cousin.

17 Jul 1828: John and Christiana were married in Williamson County.[5]

17 Sep 1829: He sold 100 acres for $150 to John Hedgepeth on the waters of Falling Creek adjoining Robert Warnick.  The parcel was described as that tract conveyed to William Nash, then to John McPeak to James Miller, and finally to John W. Miller.  Witnesses: William and Elisha Robinson, but the deed was acknowledged 25 Dec 1837 or 39 by [brother] Thomas Miller and William Arnold Senior.[6]  John Arnold had married Jane Miller, yet another sibling to Rachel Drennan Miller.

A Williamson County newspaper carried the following announcement: "Catherine Dickinson Miller, daughter of John W. Miller Esq, died 5 Sep 1834."  But wouldn't our John, only 30 years old, be rather young to be addressed as Esquire?  Still, the death of a child born 1829-1834 would explain the gap between the marriage date of 1828 and the birth of oldest surviving child Rachel in 1836, plus we find use of the name Dickerson/Dickinson.[7]

25 Dec 1837: John sold 80 acres and 80 poles in Rutherford County to William Arnold for $14.88.  The parcel was located on the waters of Falling Creek adjoining William Jones and John Hedgepath.  The deed was witnessed by Thomas Miller and Silas Hedgepeth.[8]

1840 Census, Williamson County, TN: John W. Miller was enumerated with 1 male under 5, 1 30-40; 1 female under 5, 2 20-30; 3 slaves.  Who is the other 20-30 year old female?

27 Aug 1850 Census, Williamson County, TN (District 9): Constable John W. Miller 45, born TN; Christiana 39, born Germany; Rachel D. 14; John D. 11; Belinda D. 5; Meredith G. age 6/12; Josephine Swanson 16.[9]

11 Jun 1860 Census, Williamson County, TN: Blacksmith John W. Miller 56, born TN, with real and personal property valued at $8,000 and $19,000; Cristiana 50, born in "another ____", but the word is not country; John 22, Eliza T. 20, Belinda D. 15, Meredith G. 10.[10]  I'm assuming that Eliza T. Miller is the wife of son John.

According to Susan Swinney, John built a house on the corner of 3rd and Margin Streets in Franklin, TN c. 1866.

3 Jun 1870 Census, Williamson County, TN (District 9, Franklin P.O.): Trader  John W. Miller 65, born TN, with real and personal property valued at $5,000 and $5,600; Christiana 59, born Bavaria; Meridith 20, born TN.  Also enumerated in the household was Lisbon Perkins, a black brick mason, age 40, born TN.[11]

14 Mar 1871: Christiana died in Williamson.

June 1880 Census, Williamson County, TN (District 9): Blacksmith John Miller 75, TN SC SC.[12]

1 Dec 1888: John died, presumably in Williamson County.[13]  Their burial place isn't known to me.

Thomas D. & Mary A. Miller

28 Nov 1795: Thomas was born in York County, SC.[14]  The 1840, 1860, and 1870 Censuses both support that year.    The 1850 Census, however, would indicate a birth year before 1800, and parents Henry and Rachel were enumerated with only one son under 10 in the 1800 Census.

c. 1809 Mary was born in TN.  In light of "Roberson (or Robertson) Miller", their son, was that her maiden name?  Or might she have been a Hedgepeth?

Thomas supposedly fought in the War of 1812.  Once again, this supports the given birth year of 1795.[15]

25 Dec 1837: Thomas Miller and Silas Hedgepeth witnessed a deed from John W. Miller  to William Arnold for 80+ acres on the waters of Falling Creek.  On that day also, along with William Arnold Senior, Thomas acknowledged a deed dated 17 Sep 1829 from John W. Miller  to John Hedgepeth and witnessed by William and Elisha Robinson.[16]  Presumably the Robinsons had moved or died.

1840 Census, Rutherford County, TN: Thomas Miller was listed with 2 males under 5, 2 5-10, 1 10-15, 1 40-50; 1 female under 5, 1 15-20, 1 30-40.  The family was enumerated next to Silas Hedgepeth.  See 25 Dec 1837.

7 Sep 1850 Census, Fall Creek District, Rutherford County, TN: Farmer Thomas Miller 45, born  SC, with property valued at $500; Mary A. age 41, born TN; Daniel R. 19; John W. 15; William A. 14; Robertson 12; Margaret 11; Albert H. 7; Sarah A. 4; Henry T. 2.  All the children were born in  TN.  They were enumerated next to Henry and Rachel Miller, close to Henry Jones.[17]

4 Jul 1860 Census, Rutherford County, TN (Jefferson P.O.): Farmer Thomas Miller 65, born SC, with real and personal property valued at $2,400 and $300; M. 51, born TN; male W. age 25; male R. age 23; male A. age 18; female S. A. age 14; Thomas 12; male N. Northcut 26; female M. Northcut 20; Thomas Northcut age 1.[18]   I'm assuming that male W. is John W., that male R. is Robertson, and male A. is Albert.  M. Northcut is Margaret, Thomas's daughter and N. was Newton Northcut, Thomas' son-in-law.

5 Aug 1870 Census, Rutherford County, TN (District 5, Walter Hill P.O.): Farmer Thomas Miller 74, born NC, with property valued at $500; Mary 64, born TN; farm laborer Henry T. age 22, born TN.[19]

27 Jun 1879: Thomas died and was buried in Rest Haven Cemetery, Williamson County, TN.

Children of Thomas Miller:  According to Mrs. Claud Slate, Thomas was married three times and had nine children.  We therefore can't be certain that Mary was the mother of the following children.[20]

*Daniel R. Miller ( Sep 1830 - c. 1911; m. Nancy A. Jones 3 Jan 1853)

William Anderson Miller (3 Oct 1835 - 20 Jul 1896; m. Susan A. Herron 29 Jan 1869)

John W. Miller (c. 1835 -     )

Roberson Miller (c. 1838 -     ; m. Mary Ramsey 2 Feb 1865)

Margaret Miller (c. 1839 -     ; m. George Newton Northcutt 2 Dec 1857)

Albert H. Miller (c. 1843 -     ; m. Malissa _______)

Sarah A. Miller (c. 1846 -     )

Henry T. Miller (c. 1848 -     )

*Daniel's wife Nancy A. Jones was the daughter of Henry and Winnifred McKnight Jones.  Henry was probably the brother of Darling Jones.  During the 1860s, Daniel and Nancy Jones Miller moved to Weakley County, TN, where Darling and Margaret Miller Jones were living.

Jane Miller

26 Dec 1810: Jane Miller was born in Wilson County, Tennessee.[21]

25 Dec 1833: Jane married Milton Reese McKay.[22]  Milton had been born on 12 Mar 1807, the son of William and Jane Porter McKay.  They were living in Williamson County, as daughter Christiana was born there on 8 Dec 1833.

14 Nov 1838: Milton died, leaving Jane seven months pregnant.[23]

21 Jun 1842: Jane McKay married Nicholas Rogers in Rutherford County.

She lost second husband Nicholas before 1856, when she moved to Bates County, MO as a widow.  There were no children from the marriage.  After the deaths of daughter and son-in-law Christiana and James Drennan, Jane raised her two granddaughters, Ruth and Jane Drennan.[24]

1860 Census, Charlotte, Bates County, MO: Farmer Jane McKay 50, born TN, with real and personal property valued at $5,000 and $5,000; James M. McKay 24, born TN; Jane R. McKay 21, born TN.  Jane is listed as a male, but surely this must be our Jane Miller McKay.

3 Aug 1870 Census, Walnut Creek Bates County, MO (Pleasant Gap P.O.): Farmer J. M. McKay 34, born TN, with real and personal property valued at $4,000 and $1,450; E. Posey 26, born MO; Jane 59, born TN, with real and personal property estimated at $4,000 and $920; Jennie 30, born TN; Mary Drennan 14;  Jennie Drennan 6, born TN; farm laborer J. F. Adams 22, born KY; Sam Tuspin 8, born in KY, listed as black.[25]  J. M. McKay was, of course, son James;  Mary and Jennie were Jane's granddaughters, who she raised after the death of their parents James and Christiana McKay Drennan.

14 Jan 1880 Census, New Home, Bates County, MO: Jane McKay 70, TN NC NC; granddaughter M. R. Drennan 24; granddaughter J. R. Drennan 17.

22 Jan 1899: Jane died and was buried in Bates County.[26]

Jones may have been related to our Jones; James and William Drennan were Esther's maternal cousins; and the Jenkins were connected to Hughleys, Shanes, and Drennans.  Henry and Winnifred Jones had a ward named Mintie Jenkins residing with them in Weakley County in 1880.
