Mar 1842: Lucinda D. Shane was born in Tennessee.
Feb 1852: James W. Burnett was born in Missouri. He was presumably the James Burnett enumerated in the 1880 Census in Grantsville, Linn County, MO. A farmer age 27, MO MO MO, he was listed with wife Mary 25 and daughter Flossa 4 months.
1 Jun 1880 Census, Locust Creek Township, Linn County, MO: Farmer William R. Shane 24, TN TN TN; mother Asenath Shane 65, a widow, TN OH OH; sister and boarder Lucinda Shane 34, TN TN TN.[1]
16 Aug 1892: Lou Shane of Brookfield married "James W. Burnett of Winnegan, Sullivan County, MO.[2]
1900 Census, Brookfield, Linn County, MO: James W. Burnett, with no occupation listed, age 48, born in Feb 1852, MO MO MO; wife Lucinda age 58, born in Mar 1842, KY TN TN, married for 7 years; son Walter J. 9, Oct 1890, MO MO MO; daughter Louise age 18, Mar 1882, MO MO MO. The family is residing on Peck Street.[3]
The final settlement of the Joseph Shane estate in 1905 and 1906 included: Nannie Shane $25.00, Etta Shane $25.00, and Josie Shane $10.00 in 1905. On both occasions Lucinda Burnett signed for Josie Shane.
1910 Census, Brookfield, Linn County, MO: James W. Burnett 58, MO MO MO, married for 17 years, with "own income" listed for his employment, owner of a home on Peck Street; Lucina D. age 68, TN TN TN; nephew Charles E. Phillips age 30, IL TN TN, a laborer for the railroad; with Ambrose H. Evans, employed in "treeing" at a shoe factory, his wife Addie B. and two children.[4]

16 Jul 1846: Joseph was born in Tennessee.[5]
9 Jun 1870 Census, Concord, Adams County, IL: Joseph J. Shane, 22, was enumerated in a household with parents James B, a farmer age 70, born TN; Azenith 59, born TN; and Fanny Shane 17.[6]
1880 Census, Arcadia, Morgan Co, IL: Farmer Joseph J. Shane 33, TN TN TN; wife Anna M. 21, MO IL OH; Eleva W. age 4, IL TN MO; Laura L. age 1, IL TN MO. [Census Index/Orig: Pg 18A]
6 Jun 1900 Census, Brookfield, Linn County, MO (Ward 4): Shoemaker Joseph Shane, age 53, born Jul 1857, TN TN TN, married 14 years, renting home at 429 S. Livingston; wife Nannie; age 33, born Mar 1867, IL PA NC, mother of 2 children, both living; Luther, born Jan 1887, MO TN IL; Josie, born May 1892, MO TN IL. Another family is also residing at that same address: James Libby, a day laborer, with wife Emma and 6 children.[7] One can assume that Joseph's first wife Anna had died and his daughters had married in the intervening 20 years.
30 Jan 1902: Joseph died and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Brookfield.[8]
9 Feb 1903: T. M. Brinkley posted $200 bond as Administrator of the Joseph J. Shane estate, Shane having died intestate and widow Nannie having revoked her right to administer. On 17 May 1904, he, C. W. Brinkley, and W. J. Carlon certified that the deceased owned no real estate. In fact, the major portion of the estate was $151.30 inherited from the estate of his uncle, Daniel Guthrie. His heirs were Etta, Luther, and Josie Shane, his widow was Nannie Shane; all residing in Brookfield. The final settlement was: Nannie Shane $25.00, Etta Shane $25.00, and Josie Shane $10.00 in 1905 and again in 1906 (also signed by Lucinda Burnett). Where's Luther? And who was Etta Shane? Was she one of his daughters by Anna?

5 Jun 1917: James Luther Shane, age 30, born 31 Jan 1887 in Rosier, Missouri, registered for the draft in Union County, New Mexico. A self-employed farmer in Mount Dora with a wife and child, he was described as tall and slender, with blue eyes and dark hair, he stated that his skull had been fractured.

Almira Jane Shane & Joseph Brown Ausmus
22 Feb 1847: Joseph Brown Ausmus was born in Brown County, IL, the son of James Ausmus and Elizabeth Hoey.
3 Aug 1850: Almira Shane was born in Tennessee. Her name was often written as Elmira or Elmyra.[9]
Joseph B. Ausmus served as a Private, 119th IL Infantry in the Civil War. Companies of the 119th Regiment were drawn from Brown, Adams, and Schuyler Counties, IL.
14 Oct 1865: Almira and Joseph were married in Nashville, TN. It's odd that both Almira and her sister Anna married Union soldiers. Almira's marriage coming so quickly after the War's end is especially intriguing. did the family have Northern sympathies throughout the War? And did Joseph already have a connection to his fellow union soldier and future brother-in-law John Hale?

14 Jun 1880 Census, Jackson Township, Linn County, MO: Farmer Joseph Ausmus 33, IL IL VA; Almira 29, TN TN TN; William F. age 11, IL IL TN; Ida 6; Lela 1, MO IL TN.[11]
Joseph B. Ausmus #128963, a resident of Linneus, was listed on the Linn County Pensioners Roll in 1883. His condition was described as "chronic diarrhea, with a pension amount of $4.00 granted May 1874. This was undoubtedly for his Civil War service in the 119th IL Infantry.
1 Jun 1900 Census, Dolan, Cass County, MO: Joseph Ausmus 53, born Feb 1847, IL IL VA, married for 35 years, employed as a tinner; Elmira 49, born Aug 1850, TN TN TN, mother of 7 children, 5 living; son Frank 30, born Jun 1869, IL IL TN, employed as a barber, married for 6 years; daughter Lelia 21, born Sep 1878, MO IL TN; son Budd 18, born Sep 1881, employed as day laborer; Arthur 13, born Jan 1887; daughter-in-law Jennie 28, born Nov 1871, VA VA VA, mother of 1 child, still living.[12] Based upon birth month and year, son Budd must be Joseph James Ausmus, born 16 Sep 1881.
24 Jan 1902: Almira died in Linn County of unknown causes. She is buried in Laclede.
21 Sep 1935: Joseph died in Rogers, Washington County, AR. He is buried in Sec 2, Site 64A in the National Cemetery in Springfield, MO.[13]

Joseph James Ausmus, age 36, born 16 Sep 1881, registered for the WWI draft in Bigheart, Osage County, OK. Married to Lula Mae Ausmus, he was employed as an oil well supply foreman. He was described as medium height and build, with brown hair and brown eyes.

William Robert Shane
18 Dec 1855: William was born in Tennessee.
He is probably the William Shane, a 16 year old laborer, born TN, enumerated in the household of farmer Gabriel Kinsay in Mount Sterling, Brown County, IL on 20 Jul 1870. His sister Mary Phillips also resided in Mount Sterling.[14]

3 Dec 1884: The case of City of Brookfield versus William R. Shane was continued until 9 Dec 1884, then dismissed on 4 Jun 1885 as both parties reached an agreement and each paid costs.[16]
9 Jun 1900 Census, Ward 2, Brookfield, Linn County, MO: Minister William Shane, age 44, born Dec 1855, TN TN TN, owning home and residing at 124 Shane St; wife Dot, born May 1866, IL; daughter Ruth, born 1893 in MO.[17]
16 Mar 1930: William Robert Shane, identified as the son of James Shane and Asenith Guthrey, died in Kansas City, MO of "aortic incompency" and arterioschlerosis. A preacher, he resided at 1643 Fremont and was a widower whose wife had been named "Lue". The informant on the death certificate was Ruth M. Butler or Buller, who was surely his daughter.
William is buried in Elmwood Cemetery.
